The investor backing Brazil's most driven founders, from day zero to greatness. Enabling thousands of founders every year to launch and scale companies that move the world forward.

Veja a seguir:

Organize a casa

How to Start Fundraising for Your Startup in 2024

A practical guide for securing the round your business needs to grow

After a successful 2021 with record investments, the venture capital industry started undergoing a period of change. Due to inflated valuations and a macroeconomic environment with high inflation and interest rates, investors have shifted their focus from 2022 onwards to startups that prioritize sustainable growth, have clear paths to profitability, and practice careful financial management of their operations.

This change in the venture capital industry presents a challenge for founders looking to fundraise. Despite this tough environment, there are still many opportunities for startups in the Brazilian ecosystem. Not only has the number of venture capital firms increased by 85% in Latin America (source: VC Radar LatAm 2023), but VC and private equity investors also have more than US$ 13.4 billion in dry powder—resources available for promising businesses in the region (source: Preqin).

To help you navigate this landscape, we have put together a practical guide for startups looking to increase their chances of raising capital from venture capital funds. The guide offers tips on how to prepare for the fundraising process, identify the right investors, and build a compelling pitch. Read on for more information:

Prepare for the Journey

Fundraising is a marathon. Be prepared to dedicate a lot of time and energy to this process. Oftentimes, the founding team will need to divide their attention between the day-to-day of running a startup and the capital-raising journey. Creating compelling presentations, nurturing relationships with investors, and keeping financial information updated require a lot of focus. Be prepared!

Conduct a Self-Assessment

Before embarking on the fundraising journey, dive deep into the strengths and weaknesses of your company. Analyze your key metrics, such as revenue, cash flow, number of users, and customer acquisition cost. Be honest about your challenges so you can think about how investors can help leverage your business's growth.

Get Your House in Order

With all this information in hand, it's time to create a “data room” for your startup, a virtual repository containing all relevant information about your operations. This includes financial statements, market research, product demonstrations, team biographies, and legal documents. A well-organized data room demonstrates governance, transparency, and professionalism, fostering trust with potential investors.

Design Your Strategy

Develop a clear and concise business plan outlining your company's mission, target market, competitive landscape, marketing strategy, financial projections, and use of proceeds—a description of how you plan to use the money from the investment. Remember: the amount requested must be directly linked to your specific growth plans and be achievable!

Tell a Story

Having an incredible product, a complementary founding team, and impeccable data organization is not enough. To capture investors' attention, you need to tell a compelling story about your company. Create a narrative that highlights the business's value proposition, emphasizing the impact of your product on users' lives. Show your vision for the future and where you intend to take the company. Put together a cohesive presentation that resonates with your target audience. Then, practice your pitch until you can deliver it with confidence and conciseness.

Choose Your Investors

Not all investors are the same. Research and identify venture capital funds that align with your industry and investment philosophy. Also, know the maturity level at which managers generally operate: angel, early-stage, or late-stage. Build out a list of potential investors and actively network with them through industry events, conferences, and online platforms.

The path to securing funds for your startup may not be easy, but with a lot of preparation, a compelling story, and a strategic approach, you can attract the right investors and propel your startup toward a successful investment round.

By following these steps and adapting them to your specific context, you'll be able to fundraise with confidence and take your startup to the next level.

Remember, the journey itself is a valuable learning experience, and regardless of the outcome, you will emerge from it as a stronger and more resilient entrepreneur.
