O Brasil é um país que possui uma forte natureza empreendedora, com mais de 67% da população adulta engajada com o empreendedorismo de alguma forma, segundo o Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM). Esse ímpeto para criação de negócios também é percebido no ecossistema de inovação, onde a abundância de talentos na área de tecnologia fizeram o número de startups crescer mais de 200% entre 2015 e 2022 no país, de acordo com dados da Abstartups (Associação Brasileira de Startups).

Criar e gerir uma startup, no entanto, não é uma tarefa simples. São inúmeros os desafios que se apresentam aos founders desde o dia zero, desde o desenvolvimento do produto até a gestão financeira do negócio. De acordo com pesquisa da Fundação Dom Cabral, 25% dos negócios de base tecnológica morrem um ano depois de iniciarem sua operação. Após quatro anos de atividade, 50% das companhias decretaram falência. Com mais de dez anos, esse índice pode chegar a 75%.

Os founders que contrariam as estatísticas e constroem startups de sucesso são aqueles que entendem que a criação de um negócio é um compromisso sério e de longa duração. Pensando nisso, nós listamos os três passos iniciais que qualquer founder precisa dar para criar seu próprio negócio de tecnologia: definir uma área de interesse; fazer pesquisas e entender o funcionamento do mercado; encontrar um cofundador que te acompanhe na jornada empreendedora. 

1. Defina uma área de interesse

Antes de começar a criar um produto ou estruturar um serviço, é essencial que o founder escolha o setor com o qual deseja atuar – alguns exemplos: Saúde, Educação, Finanças etc. Para aumentar suas chances de sucesso, a dica é fundamentar sua decisão com uma indústria na qual tenha algum tipo de expertise ou proximidade, pois isso dá credibilidade ao negócio, além de proporcionar acesso aos principais stakeholders do mercado.

No entanto, escolher a área de atuação é apenas o primeiro passo. Em cada indústria, há uma infinidade de desafios a serem resolvidos. Cabe ao time fundador identificar um problema que seja grande o suficiente – com milhões de potenciais usuários e que faça parte de um mercado em expansão –, mas também que frequentemente apareça na vida das pessoas e, portanto, precise ser urgentemente solucionado. 

2. Faça pesquisas e analise o mercado

Não corra o risco de criar um negócio que não possui nenhum tipo de demanda do mercado. De acordo com uma pesquisa da CB Insights, 35% das startups morrem justamente porque atacaram um problema inexistente, sendo o segundo principal motivo pelos quais uma companhia de base tecnológica decreta falência.

Para evitar esse tipo de situação, o founder precisa “fazer a lição de casa” e pesquisar muito sobre o funcionamento e o tamanho do mercado no qual deseja atuar. Coletar dados e informações sobre o atual contexto do setor, incluindo quais são os principais desafios de cada um dos principais atores dessa indústria, é imprescindível para compreender os caminhos ideais para criar uma potencial solução.

3. Encontre um cofundador

Encontrar a pessoa certa para percorrer os desafios da jornada empreendedora é tão importante quanto desenvolver um excelente produto, ou ter uma visão clara de qual problema se irá resolver. O time fundador é o principal responsável pelo sucesso de um negócio, logo, quanto mais alinhados e complementares forem os co-founders, melhor para o futuro do negócio.

Segundo a pesquisa da CB Insights, 14% das startups dão errado justamente por conta do time não ser o ideal para solucionar o problema no qual estavam trabalhando. Por isso, é fundamental que, desde o início, o time fundador trabalhe para criar uma estrutura de governança, que será responsável por mediar todas as partes interessadas, estabelecendo políticas transparentes de administração do negócio.

A co-founder da MABE Bio Marina Belintani, que participou do primeiro programa de residência da Antler no Brasil, afirma que essa experiência fez ela transformar a sua tese em um modelo de negócio. “O programa tem uma metodologia muito interessante que faz com que você reflita o que quer alcançar como profissional, promove encontros com pessoas que possam estar potencialmente na mesma fase que você e capacitações na área de negócios através de talks, aulas e exercícios”, conta.

Para a co-founder da TalkBlue, Camila de Sande, que participou da segunda residência, diz que a experiência com a Antler no Brasil foi mais rica que participar de um MBA, por conta da quantidade de conteúdos e networking proporcionados. “Além de todo conhecimento e mentoria, a melhor coisa que eu levei do programa da Antler foi ter conhecido meu sócio. Nós somos complemente complementares tecnicamente, mas com a mesma ambição e sonhos”, afirma.

3 Steps for Building Your Startup in 2024

Start your founder journey next year

Brazil is a country with a strong entrepreneurial spirit, with over 67% of the adult population engaged in entrepreneurship in some way, according to the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM). This drive to build businesses is also evident in the innovation ecosystem, where the abundance of talent in the technology sector has led to a more than 200% increase in the number of startups between 2015 and 2022, based on available data from Abstartups (Brazilian Startup Association).

But creating and managing startups is not a simple task. Founders face numerous challenges from day zero, from product development to financial management. A study by Fundação Dom Cabral found that 25% of Brazilian tech-based businesses fold within a year of starting operations. After four years of activity, 50% of companies declare bankruptcy. Within ten years, this rate can reach 75%.

The founders who defy these statistics and build successful startups are those who understand that starting a business is a serious and long-term commitment. With this in mind, we have outlined the initial three steps that any founder needs to take to create their own technology business: define an area of interest, conduct market research, and find a co-founder to follow you on the entrepreneurial journey.

1. Define an Area of Interest

Before starting to create a product or service, a founder needs to choose the sector in which they want to operate in— for instance, health, education, and finance. To increase the chances of success, we advise focusing on an industry where the founder has some expertise. This lends credibility to the business and provides access to key market stakeholders.

However, choosing an area of operation is only the first step. In each industry, there are countless challenges to be addressed. It is up to the founding team to identify a significant problem—one that has millions of potential users, is part of a growing market, and frequently appears in people's lives, therefore requiring urgent resolution.

2. Conduct Research and Analyze the Market

Avoid creating a business that has no market demand. 

According to a CB Insights survey, 35% of startups fail because they tackled a nonexistent problem,  making it the second leading reason why technology-based companies declare bankruptcy.

To avoid this situation, founders need to 'do their homework' by extensively researching the workings of the market they intend to enter and understanding its potential size.

Collecting up-to-date data and information about the industry— including the main challenges faced by each of the major players in the sector—is essential for creating a potential solution.

3. Find a Co-founder

Finding the right person to navigate the challenges of an entrepreneurial journey with, is as important as developing an excellent product or having a clear vision of the problem. The founding team is responsible for the success of a business. The more aligned co-founders are, the better it is for the business.

CB Insights discovered that 14% of startups fail because the team is not suited for solving the problem they were working on. Therefore, it is crucial that from the beginning, the founding team creates a governance structure responsible for mediating among all stakeholders and establishing transparent business administration policies.

Marina Belintani, co-founder of MABE Bio, who participated in Antler's first residency program in Brazil, says this experience turned her thesis into a real business model. 

"The program has a very interesting methodology that makes you reflect on what you want to achieve as a professional, taking meetings with people who may potentially be in the same phase as you, and sharing information through talks, masterclasses, and activities," she says.

For Camila de Sande, co-founder of TalkBlue, who participated in the second residency, the experience with Antler in Brazil was richer than attending an MBA, due to the amount of content and networking provided. "In addition to all the knowledge and mentoring, the best thing I took from the Antler’s program was meeting my partner. We are technically complementary but have the same ambition and dreams," she says.
